What are the differences between slim fit, fitted, modern fit and trim fit?

I'm pretty new at this and about to buy some dress shirts and suit jacket online.

My measurement is 15.5 34/35, 32 waist, 5'9" height. My body type is athletic/swimmer with broad shoulder/chest and thin waist. Most of my regular fitted shirts look too big below my chest so I need a type of shirt that really fits my body shape.

So I found these shirts online: slim fit, fitted, modern fit and trim fit. So what are the differences? Which one is the slimmest waist-wise?

And on a side note, what jacket size or type should I get that fits well?

Depends on the company. These are all essentially variants of "slim fit". Slim fit varies significantly by company.

Might also look into Gap, JC Penney, Banana Republic, Nordstorm and Perry Ellis.

You can't buy shirts online.
Well you can, but ANY slim fit will still be too large for you.
You can buy slim fit shirts, but they will STILL need further tailoring.

Here is the best tip you're going to get:
Find a dry cleaner seamstress who can slim down shirts for you. $10-$15/each.
Every shirt you buy will need to be altered. Get used to that idea.

I personally don't own any of the brands you've mentioned. But they are pretty cheap shirts I'm assuming the market price is $20 for a new one.

I'd go to a department store to try on each brand, and find one that works for you. I wouldn't waste money tailoring a cheap shirt, it'll cost more than 1/2 of what the value of the shirt is.

If you let us know your budget, we can suggest you some brands to look into, which would be a better alternative to the brands you've mentioned...

There's no way to tell. Every company is going to use those terms to mean different things.

The Van Heusen and Arrow 'fitted' shirts are as slim as my Brooks Brothers Extra Slim Fit.

Their shirts are graded as: Regular, slim, and then fitted.

The quality is not the greatest, but for $20, it is worth giving it a try.

Again, NONE of the slim/tapered/athletic cut shirts will fit you.
NOTHING is cut for a 32W, period.
Buy some $20 shirts and experiment in getting them altered.
Sleeves may or may not need slimming, based on the shirt.

If you want to do alterations, you're going to have to experiment & spend some money to learn what fits you.

Thank you for all of your advice. I knew I asked the right people at the right place

I'm going to spend some time trying out different brands at shopping mall then buy them online. Then I'll tailor them if deemed necessary. Since they'll be within $20-$30 range I don't mind spending extra 10-15 bucks for tailoring. Much better than $75 shirt + $15 tailoring

Will definitely check out Van Heusen and Arrow Men. I think they are available at my local shopping mall.

As a general rule of thumb from my own experience I would order these fits from most to least slim in the following order:

Trim Fit, Slim Fit, Fitted, and modern fit being the biggest. Hope that helps
