What pants fabrics are wearable with each cotton, wool, polyester and linen sportscoats?

For example is wearing a wool sportscoat with polyester pants acceptable?

What are the acceptable combinations?

Polyester is never acceptable. As for color combinations, it's not complicated, wear colors that go well together. If you have problems with that, then stick to suits.

Poor breathability; artificial sheen; static electricity; hard to clean; promotes and holds odours; hot in summer and cold in winter; and it doesn't have the qualities, tradition, integrity and general je ne sais quoi of natural fibres like wool, cotton and linen.

It's fine for athletic gear and things like windbreakers, but not for jackets, shirts and trousers.

This is an article of faith on forums like this one, but also generally accepted in the wider community of people with even a passing interest in and knowledge of clothing and fabrics.

I'll say this, synthetic has come a long way since the 90s. There are some garments that fake the funk pretty well these days and sometimes it's hard to tell the difference. That said, I would still not wear something that isn't a natural fiber. No matter how good the synthetic fiber, at least for now, it still isn't as nice as wool/cotton/linen in terms of comfort, breathability, and aesthetics. Who the hell knows though, science may yet build a better material than wool.

Taking polyester out of the equation, I don't have any issues mixing different fabrics in an outfit. I'd say weather and seasonality matter much more and it looks weird to wear winter items and summer items together. Heavy cord trousers would look much stranger with a linen jacket than tropical weight wool trousers. Likewise, these same cord trousers would be very much appropriate with a heavier winter wool or tweed odd jacket. As long as each item you wear is seasonally appropriate and the color combinations work, I wouldn't sweat the fabric choices too much.

#8. Plus, try not to combine linen with linen, corduroy with corduroy, and other such pairings of similar, textured fabrics, for it often looks costumey.
