Can anyone please help me to figure out what kind of boots these are? I'm absolutely in love with them. Style/brand? And where I can get them?

Don't know what they are but the heel looks weird to me..just get one of vince's plain toe service boots, hes has a ton of brown available in shades similar...and ask him to order you a white christy or vibram sole

i was browsing on some of the sample sale offers and noticed that the lasts on each boot are very different.

Truman's website says "Our lasts come in D only at the moment, but the 79 last is very forgiving on widths C through E."

Of the 2 sample photos below, does anyone know which is the "79 last" and what is the name for the other one? Would like to ask here first before sending an email to Truman.

My guess is one is structured toe and one is unstructured toe Looks like your first pic is boot one which states unstructured. Hopes this helps

Has anyone ordered the horsehide boots? Curious to see what they look like after a few wears. I know nothing about horsehide, so I'm trying to figure out the advantages and why they are over $100 more.

You're welcome. Vince makes a great boot. Which leather are you looking at? Lots of good choices

wow where do i even begin? i have been jonesing for something more on the distressed side like the teak waxy mohawk but the classic shoulder oiled looks amazing too. for soles i have always liked the commando but i'm starting to warm up to the LH sole especially after hearing someone say how comfortable and yet how durable it is. what have u gotten from vince so far? :)

actually i am hoping vince will bring in stuff from shinki hikaku tannery one day which is why i am holding back for now. anyone here has experience with their leather?

I can't comment on the HH boots specifically, but I can offer some info on horse vs. cow leathers. Horse generally has a higher tensile strength, a courser grain, and is more abrasion resistant. Across the hide, horse tends to be slightly less consistent but that should be less of a concern on boots (typically smaller cuts when compared to a jacket) and isn't really worth worrying over if your sourcing from a quality tannery

In short - HH is harder wearing and will typically show more grain

Old blog post from Nick Horween, himself, that covers horse vs. cow/steer hide.

http://horween.com/101/by-request-whats-the-difference/

The above poster is mainly saying what Horween had said, but adds the part about horse being "harder wearing," which is something that people debate, especially when comparing the highest-quality heavy duty cow/steer vs. the highest-quality heavy duty horse.

The main reason to go with horse over cow is aesthetic preference...but most of this is about aesthetics, isn't it?

BTW...love my Trumans waxy snuff Mohawk and am waiting on a pair of horsehide ones. It's all good!

Edit: I had forgotten to include link.

I agree that the differences manifest in a mostly aesthetic way b/c quality cow hide is certainly a strong enough material to make hard wearing boots out of. I think the abrasion resistance would be the most important to me b/c it would take me longer to mangle the toe.

Toe mangling can be an issue...

I am assuming you are not into the aesthetics of the various goops and plastic things meant to protect toes?

Although Truman toe caps generally are purely aesthetic, as they are not an extra layer of leather, as far as I know, one might be able to get them to put on a toe cap as an extra layer, which would then be replaceable. For work boots, I know Nick's, White's, Wesco, and Viberg do this... Of course, I am probably not telling you anything you don't already know better than me...but maybe some lurker will benefit from the knowledge...

If you are into mangling toes you are better off with a steel toe Red Wing . I worked 30 years as a pipe welder in heavy construction and as much as I love my Trumans I'm pretty sure I could totally destroy a pair in about 6 months under those conditions . Steel toes, plastic goop and easy re-sole is what you need

I usually take off my boots before laying pipe

Adolescent outburst aside though, it's nice to have some folks in the boot threads who do/have done real work
