I need chinos and grey wool trousers with low rises, slim legs and not-too-roomy seat AND not TOO expensive. I live in Manhattan so there are stores all about, but I don't want to run about dropping and donning trou. Has anyone had good experiences with Club Monaco, Banana Republic, Gap, Ben Sherman. Lee jeans makes trousers that have low rises but wide legs. After a bad perios, I finally care again about grooming, so any help is appreciated

Banana Republic makes trousers that are low rise and slim-fitting. I wouldn't ever pay full price for them, but if they are on the sale rack, then they are not a bad deal. Express also has slim-fitting inexpensive pants, but I think they look cheaper and often have cheaper materials (e.g. polyester).

Undoubtedly many posters here will disagree, but personally, I've had very good luck with Club Monaco trousers. The fit is perfect on me (6', 175lbs, 32 waist) and they are slim enough to work well with no/little break. My Club Monaco trousers have also held up very well to regular wear and dry cleaning; they seem to hold a nice crease as well.

I've done the GAP thing way too many times in the past, and have never really ended up happy. Their pants work okay as a golf pant, but never as something I'd wear to work with pride.

Ben Sherman has provided me with an "okay at best" experience.

H&M's cut for their trousers can be great as well, but the durability/materials just isn't as dependable as I'd like.

Re H amd M--I had a great looking pinstrip pair. I felt some coolness on my rear at work and found the seat seam had come unstitched. Fortunately I donned a jacket and spent lunchtime in the cleaner tailor across from the office with my trousers in the tailor's care

I like the Ben Sherman cut and fit, but the quality isn't fabulous. Would recommend, provided you aren't paying full retail.

RL has some chinos on sale at the moment on their website, too.

My best fitting pair of chinos are the slim fit from J Crew for $20 that I had altered even further to make them just right.

I've also had good luck with Club Monaco trousers - I think the Ethan pants are definitely low rise and possibly slim fitting. I can't remember that detail.

Depending on how you feel about it, you may also want to try French Connection on a DEEP discount. I got some low-rise, slim fit trousers at 70% off, and then it didn't seem so painful. They also fit incredibly well, and they stilll look good a year later.

That's been my experience with H&M also.

I would hardly describe Banana Republic or J. Crew as slim-fitting. BR's slimmest pant is still fairly roomy, and J. Crew's Classic Fit (their slimmest) is trim at best.

I picked up a pair of Chinook chinos from the Warehouse Sale and I was surprised by how trim they were; I could have sized down one, but as is, it's still a clean, slouchy look.

I have a pair of Raf by Raf pants and they are the trimmest I have, although they may be too skinny for the OP, depending on his tastes.

Also, RRL made some slim-fit corduroys that fit really, really well"”maybe the best-fitting pants that I have.
