I'm constantly re-evaluating, but here's my (current) top to bottom list:
English (Northampton) makers:
Lobb, Edward Green
Crockett & Jones 'Handgrade', G&G (?)
Crockett & Jones (main collection), Tricker's, Grenson
Church's
Cheaney, Alfred Sargent
Barker
Loake
There's obviously a bit of movement in this (some Sargent's might make the middle three), but as a rough running order I think it stands. Some makers do, of course, do certain styles better than others e.g. Tricker's "country" range, so it's worth dropping down a peg if you want that style.
Like one of Dante's demons, I'm tempted to throw Church's into the pitch. They do some really horrible, overpriced shoes and their new website is clearly designed for the continental eye.
