tie and/or shirt pattern showing through light-colored sweater

So my wife purchased me a nice crew neck sweater--it's light yellow, spring color--kind of a thin pima cotton and wool mixture. Definitely nice enough to wear under a sport coat or suit in the warmer months.

So my question is this... I put it on today and noticed that I could see through the sweater virtually any tie and the pattern on virtually every patterned shirt I own. My wife (who I usually trust in matters of style) said this was no big deal, but it looked strange to me so I grabbed a gray sweater and headed out the door.

Thoughts on the appropriateness of the warm-weather-sweater-show-through?

Another in favor of wearing with a solid shirt (or very faint pattern) and no tie.

On the Ralph Lauren site a few months ago, I noticed one of their models wearing a lightweight yellow sweater and his tie underneath was quite apparent. Not a look I would go with.

I wouldnt mind wearing a simple tie with it. Yes, people will see the tie underneath but its ok. Just be sure that it is a simple tie and not something with a colorful pattern because that would be too much. Also, make sure that it is a slim tie. Since the sweater wont really cover the tie, a wider tie will throw off the play on proportions with your body.

no fat or loud tie involved... tie was a slim, knit tie in navy (color obviously too dark if i didn't want it to show).

i think i agree with southbound that i don't like the appearance of the tie (either form or color) through the sweater at all

verdict = no ties with this one
