Courtesy Stephen Murray, poet, Galway, Ireland. All around good dude.
My mother first told me
The truth about misogyny
And I believed her
For she was the greatest misogynist
That I have ever known
She warned me of girls
Wearing butterfly wings
With a fork in their tongues
And make-up like war paint
Who romance is wasted on;
The she-devil scorpion
That crawls through the dust
With a sting in her tail
That Bibles are based on
And I believed her every word
For why shouldn't I?
Because she was the greatest scorpion
That ever grew wings
Though, she never quite
Looked like a butterfly
She told me of females that devour the male
Praying mantis's, black widows, hairdressers and Eve
She told me that the word itself
'Misogynist' meant woman hater
But it was accepted that it referred
To a man who hates women and that
It's equivalent in Latin would be 'homophobe'
But this too is presumed to be a term that refers
To men who hate men
And nobody harps on about misandry
My mother blames the suffragettes
And political correctness
For this manipulation of word play and I agree
For she is the greatest feminist
That I have ever known
She told me all this
As she folded her wings
Recoiling her tail that was loaded with stings
Then she lashed me and told me
That every bruise was a message
From my long since departed wife beating father
Whose footsteps I've followed
While holding my fists
In the Iron Maiden's temper
I have shared the bed of scorpions
And loved them for their sting
I have whispered my love to butterflies
Then growling crushed their tender wings
I have ripped the smile from the Praying Mantis
With a razor sharp tongue that bruised
Deeper than fists, cutting sharper than glass
I have spat in the eyes of beauty
And found her more radiant
For the repulsiveness of her suffering
Than for the eloquent contours
Of her flawless symmetry
My mother has shown me all the scars
That were left by my father
Because she said that she loved me
And I believe her
For she is the greatest lover of men
That I have ever known
They carousel through bedroom doors
Used by her like men use whores
She tells me that there are in fact,
Good women out there
But what really irks her
Is that its because of some women
That others wear burkas
And men are just weak, and I know it
To be true for I have stared at love's shards
Shattered by misogyny's artillery and seen myself
Weak and self-loathing at the trigger
Retaliating against an enemy whose name
I do not know, but, whose name
I know to mean man hater
My mother is quite keen
For me to find a nice girl
Settle down and give her grandchildren
She tells me to look out for the man-eaters though
The Praying Mantis, the black widow
The hairdresser, the actress, the ambition hound and Eve
Be swift she says and merciless and I believe her
Break them quick and don't look back
For there's always a joker in every pack
If they're game players son
She says snap them in two
And always look after your sister
