In the last couple of months have had several bottles of 2010 La Vieille Ferme (Perrin & Fils) Côtes du Ventoux. This is that $8 Rhone. It really is a great daily.
Me no likey Syrah... not much anyway.

Hmmm.. maybe I need to go in search of cheap French vino... in my preferred regions I find very little under $15-20 that I find palatable let alone enjoy. Exceptions being some Spanish and some rose.
My father has favoured those in the past.
Haven't had one in a while, but I've been a fan of the Penfolds Koonunga Hill cab-shiraz, like $16 a bottle here which is about what I like to pay for table wine.
Should also add that we had a bottle of Bodegas Lan Rioja Crianza last night. Really good, though it was about $30.
I've had a few failures too. However, that one delivers for a weekday meal. Also, cru Beaujolais is nice at $13-15.
What I've come to realize is that really drinkable Left Coast wine is nearly impossible to find under $25. The best under $20 bottle I can get is off the Stefania's mailing list, Haut Taube.
