Just wanted to provide an update. I hadn't heard back from Alden SF so I contacted Alden directly via email; the replacement rubber foot balance heels are available to purchase separately through Alden (just call their phone number to order) for $16 a pair. I ordered a bunch of them in anticipation that I'm wearing these Indys for the next decade

Great info RMF! That makes me wonder if Alden will also sell some of their proprietary commando soles to individuals?

Well, my new replacement Foot Balance heels arrived quickly and I think I'm now set with enough heels to last me for the next few years, or at least until my Indy's require a full Alden restoration. Although I ordered these through Alden's 1-800 number, they were sent from the SF store. Great service overall!

Yeah, it's kind of hard not to like the cigar shell on commando option…

However, just to throw some other worthy make ups into the mix:

The Epaulet Innsbruck Indy, because brown CXL looks great with brass eyes + hooks
and, the smooth tobacco chamois on commando that TSM did for a while, which
can take a lot of abuse….

This is a great question. I vote for the cigar shell commando myself (just call me part of the herd...).

With many of the guys/enablers who post here, its hard to think that there can be only one, though!!

so after alden's july vacation, the long backorder on my 10.5 eee's finally ended and the boots arrived today. Now the left shoe is pretty perfect, but the right boot has some wacky qc issues. the weird striping, scratches and metal exposed between the uppers and sole (what is that?) Are they acceptable or do they warrant an exchange?

Unacceptable to me especially exposed metal. I'll exchange them.

I could accept everything except the exposed metal. This detail makes them seconds at best IMO.
