Re: the difference between good and great suede - I've been trying to research this a bit recently and haven't quite satisfied myself with an answer but what I've learned:

There are three different ways to make things that will sometimes be called suede. You can use the flesh side of the skin and buff it to get a nap (this is true suede). You can buff the grain side of the skin (this is nubuck). Or you can split the skin and then buff one side (split suede). Split suede is lower quality.

Besides this, the feel can potentially be affected by the hide used and the buffing technique.

Some places say nubuck is more expensive. G&G and Carmina use true suede. G&G uses reverse calf and has quite a smooth finish. My Carminas have still more velvety a finish. I think I remember them saying at Pitti that it's reverse kid but I haven't been able to get an email back from them recently to confirm.

In a similar bent to the original thread question, I have a pair of light suede loafers that look similar to these. Suggestions for office-wear on a casual day?

Jeans? (I don't mind the color contrast, but I'm not sure that this style goes well with jeans)
Off white linen? (I think this works)
Tan linen? (I hope this works)
Light grey dress pants?
Navy chinos? (I know, that's probably pushing it)

It may be that these aren't office appropriate and I just use them out of work where I can dress more colorfully and pair them with chinos (medium blue, mint green, cranberry).

Which of the colors below would be most versatile as a first suede shoe for summer/fall? Also, is brogueing recommended for a first pair? Thanks!

I'd say the top color is most versatile and I'd get plain rather than a brogue or semi-brogue as a first pair

If the suede is higher quality it will be smooth. My c&j suede are smooth. Lesser quality suede is velvety/shaggy. My carmina suede is definitely not as high quality as c&j and grenson suede loafer is a give away as its way too shaggy.
