Damn bro, that's pretty harsh. They look OK to me even though J&M might not be the greatest quality.

Is there a "universal shoe tree" for size 8.5D that I can use for any shoe in my size? Or do you need to get a special shoetree for a captoe, which is different than a loafer, etc, etc...?

Trees should fill the shoe so it keeps its shape. Beware of trees that are too big and stretch the toe box...or trees that otherwise "deform" the shoe.

Also, regularly use a conditioner like Lexol (or I'm a big fan of Chelsea Leather Food).

Congratulations on your purchase!

Also important to long shoe life, be sure to wear socks of 100% Cotton -or- a blend of 80% Cotton / 20% nylon/poly/silk whatever, but the 80% Cotton minimum is a must. or 100% silk socks even. Don't buy cheap socks because those ones are only 20% Cotton and your feet won't breathe, adding to perspiration in the shoes.

Enjoy your purchase with confidence. They look just fine.

Get a good pair of shoe trees. Always use them.
Get a good shoe horn. Don't crush the backs when you put them on.
Polish them. They will always look great, and will last forever.

At the end of the day, that's all that matters. I say congrats on your first "real" purchase and enjoy them.

This is all that counts.. I think they look fine, just don't wear them with a suit and you'll be fine. Enjoy your new shoes.
