Tailoring a 38 to a 36?

I have a bunch of 38S (not Kitons) in my closet that, despite tailoring, never fit quite right.

Thoughts?

I would say yes you should. I saw the jacket but it was a short sigh, But if you have agood tailor you shouldn't have a problem.

The shoulders and the jacker length are the two things that I never like to have to change on a jacket as I feel it does not fit ot look right after that. If the shoulders would fit you then I would think Peppino can make it look like it was originally a 36.

Errrr. I'd say don't bother. That's an awful lot of money to risk on a maybe, especially after tailoring costs. Around $1500 for something that may end up being totally unwearable, or just look funny. It could end up great, but your experience seems to show otherwise. I think you'd be better off going custom, or saving the dough for something else.

If you do it, please let us know how it goes and what the cost was. I always have a hard time finding jackets that fit just right, but I've always thought it was too much to expect a tailor to be able to turn a 40 into a 39.

If the shoulders or chest have to be modified then I think you should try to find something else. It just isn't going to look and feel right after the work is done.

I have had a tailor completely re-cut two jackets successfully, but it is not cheap (was between $100-$150 for each job), and you have to live with the dimensions that cannot be changed. (i.e. they can't cut the coat length and then move up the pockets.)

It looks like someone decided that it was worth $1,250. Zack you're probably better off not having purchased that particular suit. Did you check the length of the coat? At 31.25", it has quite a long skirt for a "short".

They measured the length from the top of the collar, but yes, still not very short for a short.

Yes, probably too long anyway. And the issue is now moot, as somebody else has bought it

Assuming the other dimensions still work, $150 is worth it if you're otherwise hard to fit OTR and can find a jacket you really like at a decent price. Where did you have your work done?

You're so right. I would also add that machined shoulder alterations on an hand sewn garment(Kiton, Oxxford, etc.) will invariably diminish the "feel" for which they are so highly prized.

That's just it. I am a 39S, and I like my jackets at a 29" length. Good luck finding anything in that size. So I buy good brands off of STP and other places, pay the $150, and it's still cheaper than buying retail - plus I get something that fits. Example: Southwick retail = $700, Southwick at STP plus alterations = ~$400.

I have my work done by a tailor at one of Milwaukee's high-end menswear stores. He's very good, but has a very classical style and doesn't always trim things up as much as I'd like. They're probably not too happy when I bring in things that I buy elsewhere because usually they're brands that they actually sell in the store.

But since I order an occasional MTM suit from them, I think that keeps them happy.
