Way earlier in life I had a 9 inch drop and had to have all my suit pants recut. And it never was done to my satisfaction. Luckily I started traveling on business to the Far East and had my suits made for about 10 years and also did some MTM (Hilton, the original, and Samuelsohn).

Than life caught up and I am now a 6 inch drop.

I would suppose that a really good tailor can do a good recut, but if so, I never found a really good tailor.

Are people with a 44 and up jacket size with a 33-34 inch waist really that rare? I know RTW must take into account a broader market, but if the natural waist is at least a 38, and this only accomdates the fat people, wouldn't accompanying pants that can't be tailored down to a 34 successfully be exclusing another segment of the buyers? Doesn't make sense.

Retailers often don't know the measurements of their prospective customers as well as they should. Nevertheless, those selling suits for larger men generally are aiming at the middle-aged guys who make up a large portion of the tailored menswear market. Also, consider that men who cannot fit into the pants are less likely to buy than those on whom the pants are too large and who might never be told that it's difficult or impossible to tailor them down to the right fit.
