Suit or tux for awards ceremony?

I will attend an awards ceremony at my university (a rather large event) and I'm not sure what is the appropriate to wear. There will be a cocktail reception, followed by dinner, and finally the award ceremony. No dress code was specified on the invitation but an organizer said most men will wear suits and ties.

I own both a decent suit and a rather nice tux. I guess that, considering the answer, the suit would be the safe option. On the other hand, I have very few opportunities to wear the tux and I like it much better. Does anybody have any experience with these kind of events, especially in academia? If I choose the tux, how bad is it to be overdressed?

If the organiser says "suits and ties" there is your dress code. What is difficult about that and certainly don't look like the odd man out showing off an evening dress when it is not required.
