Hi all,
i'm in the market for my first suit and was wondering what the basic characteristics I should look for. I live in New Zealand so brand names that you are familiar with are not readily available here.

By the basics i mean: - construction quality, fabric, cut, colour etc.

I need a suit which is versatile as I will be working in a law firm and at this stage can only afford to get one to start with. I have around $500 US to spend and bearing in mind that this will be a suit which will be used year round I am wondering what fabrics I should look for, how should it be constructed etc?

My preference so far is to look for a charcoal 2 or three button suit, but I do not want to walk into a store not knowing enough to explain what I want. I'm doing a lot of reading from the Pinned Wiki and Glossary but would like any advice you can give.

Cheers.
