I feel ridiculous. I have always considered myself to be somewhat 'stylish'.. But when it comes to dress clothes I have a few problems. I am still quite young and have purchased my first suit. It is by Arnold Brandt. I am faced with the problem of selecting a proper shirt and tie to compliment it. I believe I got quite lucky on my first shirt and tie choice (you tell me). From what I understand there are many rules that I am yet to comprehend about what ties compliment what shirt and so forth. I guess this is where you guys come in.. I really need help with tie and shirt suggestions for an upcoming function where 'business attire' is required.

Basically, here is my suit and my previous tie/shirt purchase (I'd wear them again.. but I've already worn them twice in a row to the same thing.. Freshen it up a bit)

Here is what the jacket looks like..

The jacket has faint off black pinstripe. The jacket itself is solid black. Sorry, I can't use a camera.

Prior shirt and tie purchase

My specs I'll be wearing it with..

And of course the action shot (I really need to work on my posture).

I am cool with any colour, personally I was thinking oranges? But who knows.

I am 6'2" and have brown eyes with shorter brown hair.

If you could help me on my quest that would be great,

Chinook.

I think the reason you have no responses, is that your question is so open. There are vast array of shirts that can be worn with a black/charcoal suit, and a vast array of ties. Once you pick up a shirt, or tie you like then there is more solid guidance that can be directed towards completing the outfit. But at this point, there are just too many possibilities.

So go with what you like.

Not much you can do with a black suit but move on. If it had been charcoal, the possibilities would be endless. As it stands, you have a black suit. Black tie with little specks on it, I guess. Black suits are very tough, man.

Looks more charcoal to me. Maybe it's the light from the flash.

... I agree w/ mt_spiffy about howh it's wide open ... you could go w/ someting undertanted like a white shirt w/ maroon or navy tie ... for future considerations you need to take into account things like your skin tone and face structure to pick color and collar style, etc. ... check out the discussion on this in Flusser, Dressing the Man.
