Convenient they may be, but I have great disdain for them and people who use them. Most of all, I loathe those who eat food from the slow cooker and exclaim what a wonderful chef the slow-cooker-user is.

Does that make me a bad person?

Some people work for a living and don't have time to cook, what's your beef?

I love any dish/cooking method that makes it's own gravy.

We love our slow cooker. My wife went and bought a fairly high tech one, that will turn off the cooking phase after the programmed time, and go to a "warm" setting. Just this week, she set down a pork shoulder for kaluha pig prior to bed, and it was perfectly done, ready to shred, for dinner the next day. The beauty of something like that is, there's plenty of left overs, and they freeze well in a vacuum sealed bag.

She's got great roasted chicken, beef stew, and several other recipes. Slow cookers get a bad name because working class house wives pop a protein with a can of Cream of <insert here> soup, and call it a meal.

I actually prefer a pressure cooker. 'Cause I'm a speed demon--that's why.

I just started using ours to cook beans, and I am thoroughly happy with it. Provided I start the day before.

Pressure cookers are great too. Don't get an old fashioned one that sits on a stove though. Get the high tech, programmable version, that will also sear.

I have one and I love it - but I just never use it enough. I have no good excuse either, I'll try to fire it up again.

Worst thing I can say about them is I once had to cook a pork roast overnight in one. It had a very fragrant sauce. Said sauce woke me up during the night. It smelled fantastic but it was a little disturbing having green chili sauce wake you up at 2:30 AM when you aren't expecting it.
