I have been looking at jackets made by Mountain Hardwear, Arc'teryx, Columbia, and Marmot, but I don't do much outdoorsy activity and might feel like a poser in one those.

I want a simple rain- and waterproof jacket. I go to school in Wisconsin and would pair it with a sweater or fleece line in lower temps. I imagine places like J Crew and Banana Republic might sell this sort of thing. I would like to spend less than $200.

What can you guys recommend?

Arc'Teryx isn't a very well-known brand in the states. The jackets have minimal branding, and clean designs. I would start there, though they're a bit pricey. You might be able to find them on sale.

Baracuta is starting to make waterproof jackets too.

Some of Barbour's designs are okay.

Go with Mackintosh if you want a more formal raincoat. J. Crew sells them now. APC also has some nice macs.
