Shopping in montreal

Soon, I will be in Montreal for a few days before embarking on a week long stay in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Are there any "must visit" men's stores (besides the usual chain places of business)? Merci.

You should take a look at Ogilvy's department store.  It may not have the rarefied labels of some other stores, but it really is worth a visit: quietly elegant.  It has a nice Aquscutum boutique and the cafe in the basement has delicious sandwiches and cakes.

Does the bagpiper still stroll through the store at noon?  It has been 15 years since I have been in Montreal.

Not sure about the bagpiper. I was in Montreal last month for the Grand Prix and only checked out the shops on Saturday afternoon. Menswear at Ogilvy's had moved from the ground floor to the fifth floor and there was still construction on both those floors, but there was still lots of merchandise and I picked up some good buys at the Aquascutum department.

Only been to Montreal once.  Checked out both L'Uomo on Peel and Gianni on Sherbrooke.  Ended up buying at Gianni and generally preferred the merchandise.  L'Uomo had the big names as already noted.  But I found the clothing at Gianni to be much more interesting and eye-catching.  Ended up buying an Etro suit and pair of trousers and Sartoriale (by Zalieri) coat on sale.  Their shoes were fantastic as well -- Lobb (Paris), Bettanin & Venturi, etc.  I really liked the stuff and found the staff to be embarrassingly accommodating.  Of course the stuff at L'Uomo was very nice, but I found the styles at Gianni to be a bit more adventurous.  Anyway, at least worth checking out.

For big chains, you have Les Ailes (Ste-Catherine and University), Holt Renfrew (Montagne and Sherbrooke) and Harry Rosen (Peel and Ste-Catherine)

Other local stores not mentioned here include Mens (Ste-Catherine and Crescent), who carries Boss and J.Lindeberg (for the trend-setters), and there's a store on Peel and Maisonneuve. Can't remember the name but it carries Canali and Baldessarini.

If you're looking for local stuff, head down to St-Laurent between Prince Arthur and Pine and the Quartier Latin around St-Denis.
