Sultan Pasha Pure Incense (his website seems to also call this one just "incense" now.) Like some other incense frags, but more resinous.

I really should order from Sultan Pasha sometime. An incense fragrance is the one hole I’d like to fill in my collection. I’ve sampled Avignon, Cardinal, Eau Sacree (my favorite), Tauers Incense Extreme and a few others probably. I have a sample of Reve d’Ossian by Oriza Legrand in the mail.

I’ve been wearing Sel Marin a lot lately. Salty is what people often say about it, I don’t get that. To me it’s if you were to smell an aerosol can of whipped cream mixed with ozonic/aquatic notes sans calone.

@Guitar Preacher Have you tried Montale Full Incense and Trudon Mortel? Those are my other favorite incenses.

And Sultan Pasha has a few incense options if you go looking. Aside from Pure Incense, Nankun Kodo was particularly interesting, clovey and spiced.

Nankun Kodo is a great fragrance, but I get a lot of anise from my sample. Speaking of anise and incense, I highly recommend Comme des Garçons Black.

Thanks guys I made a note to try that Cire Turdon, Montale and CDG next time I make an order. Lots of incense perfumes I’ve tried add cedar that give a dried feel in my opinion. Eventually I’ll figure out if it’s myrrh, sweet myrrh, frankincense or something else that I’m looking for. Ideally its something that’s smells like what I imagine a handful of the raw crystallized product smells like. Which I’ve never smelled so as far as I know they have no odor until heated.

You should also look for Tom Ford Sahara Noir, which is bizarrely discontinued but still widely available. It’s a beautiful frankincense and labdanum fragrance.

House of Vartan has some remaining bottles of Mendittorosa on deep discount. I believe they're dropping the brand, so these are kind of priced to clear.

I haven't seen these discounted anywhere else (although, they're also hard to get in the US, so small sample size). Only Alfa, Omega, and South left. I don't remember what Omega and South smell like. I have a bottle of North, which is a "foresty" type scent. I also have a bottle of Alfa, which I like better than the "clean white sheet blowing in the wind" smell of Dior's Bois d'Argent. This has the same "clean white sheet billowing in the wind" smell, but without the faint mustiness in Bois d'Argent.

Anyway, I'd never recommend blind buying anything, so maybe get a sample through Twisted Lily. But the price here is good. Mendittorosa also has some really nice packaging.

I like the bottles.

I finished my last bit of a sample of Etat Libre d'Orange Je Suis Un Homme, which I then finally bought a bottle of. I love the petrol-like leather in this one, which transitions perfectly from the opening of bright citrus oils. Why have I gone so long without this one?

Speaking of missing out, I got a sample of Comme des Garcons Kyoto, which I never really investigated. It's relatively rich, which I was not anticipating since I was used to the airy nature of Ouarzazate.

Finally getting warm enough to enjoy Eau de Rochas, a light stinky citrus... one of those great "Eaux" of the 1960's and 70's. I read once that it was built from a recipe by Roudnitska, though he didn't have anything to do with the final product (though of course he pioneered all the great original Rochas scents along with his wife).

It's easy to find on the cheap, and great in very hot weather. It's in the vibe of the original Eau Sauvage, though less spicy.

I really enjoyed this. Does anyone have any particular Japanese incense recommendations?

For more interesting/odd scents I do enjoy Kuumba, but for my traditional I like Shoyeido and Nippon Kodo.

I’m actually burning Kuumba as I write this.

I love Begin Japanology!

For a Japanese incense fragrance I recommend Sultan Pasha Nankun Kodo.

^Interesting! While incense is a common feature in Japan, in my experience they aren't really all that into perfumes like we are. Very few of my Japanese friends wear much perfume, and when they do it tends to be fairly light and "friendly." Of course there are exceptions, but overall I was always surprised that a culture that values so many esoteric, detail/quality-oriented things... they were remarkably uninterested in parfumerie.

Then again, there are a lot of heavy cultural associations with certain smells... like all that spicy, dark incens-y stuff we love, to them reminds them of death/funerals/shrines. ;)
