Satin or regular bow-tie issue

Chaps!

One needs the expertise of the forum:

I own black bow ties in both satin (AD 56) and a cotton/polyester mix (tailormade) and next week I am attending a black tie function.

Could I get away with wearing the satin one even though my tux doesn't have satin lapels?

(I have been taught that the satin bow tie is strictly prohibited unless you wear a satin jacket or a tux with satin lapels)

(I really want to try this satin badboy on but one also want to adhere to proper dresscode)

Cheers,

J

I'd rather wear a bow-tie that doesn't match the lapels than one that has polyester in it. And I'm quite sure your lapels aren't made of cotton/polyester, so I don't see how the other bow is going to match either?

If your dinner jacket has grosgrain lapels then really you should be wearing a grosgrain bow-tie.

One bows for the master, GG bow tie it is.

And yes, the fabric I, incompetently, refered to as a cotton/polyester mix most likely is GG.

(This after some research on the fabrics most commonly used on the facings of dinner jacket lapels)

Lesson learned.
