Carl recommended them for shirtmaking a while back. So, I needed a couple basic repairs done and I went in and scoped the place out a couple weeks ago. They had a 3 shirt minimum and prices ranging from 125-150/shirt depending on fabric and specifications. They did say they would make one and let me comment before making the other two. They also seemed to have a pretty good fabric selection. I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience with them or the quality of their shirts before making the plunge.

If they are the tailors right off Main St.(near the lite-rail), then I have used them for alterations but no custom shirts.

Very acceptable results at a very fair price. Nice people too. If you go ahead with the shirt order please let us know how it turns out.

BTW: Hamilton Shirtmakers are in Houston (right near Richmond and 610). I don't know how the pricing would differ, but Hamilton has a great well earned reputation.

That's the one. Hamilton is very good but in a different price stratosphere - ~$350/shirt.

I'll post a review if I decide to do it. However, I'd like to get some commentary on them first.

No, do they do custom work?

I normally use Ann's Tailoring on W. Alabama for alterations.

I've been to Village Clothiers several times. They have always been quick with my alterations work but I haven't been 100% satisfied. Also the length alterations they made on some of my pants are already coming undone after less than a year and without much wear at all (I'm a student so the wool pants only come out for special occasions) - is this normal?

As for custom shirts, they just take the measurements and send them out to get them done. I wouldn't bother with it.

How is the communication at Saigon Tailors - do they speak pretty good english? I might try them over Hamilton if Hamilton is really going to be that expensive.

I wouldn't say the length alteration issue is unusual. I've had the hem come undone on some of mine as well. Just take the pants back and explain what happened. They should fix it for free.

They seemed to communicate pretty well at Saigon. I'm just not sure about the quality of their shirts. Perhaps I'll ask to see some samples before I buy.

As far as Hamilton goes, they have been in business longer than turnbull and asser. You are a little mistaken on the pricing. Their shirts average around 200-250. You can definitely tell them to stay towards the more durable fabrics (i.e. cheaper). They have over 700 swatches, 4 shirt minimum. I recently put in my first order for five shirts and am going for the test shirt fitting tomorrow.

I've never been to Village Clothiers- my classmate's dad is the owner of that place and I was wondering if I should go get some stuff from him.

Anyhow! Look forward to the results on Saigon Tailors.

I know he is not a shirt maker, but I am amazed that Nick Lopez does not come up more on these forums. He is, AFAIK, the only "TRUE" tailor operating in Houston. Very nice man and a true artisan.

What kind of work does he do? Suits? Do you know what his starting prices are?

He does suits, sportscoats, trousers. He also does alterations on RTW clothes, as a Brioni was in his workroom when I visited. His two piece suit prices start at $1,500 for a basic cloth. I left very impressed with his operation.
