Cheney did, but failed out. Edwards didn't.

Getting back to the OP's question as to why dimple your tie:

There is an old John Wayne movie called "The Cowboys". Roscoe Lee Browne plays the trail cook Mr. Nightlinger. There's one scene where he's explaining why you put exactly three slices into the crust of an apple pie before baking it. I don't remember the exact line, but it was something like, "one to let the steam out, one to let the air in and one because your momma did it that way."

You dimple your tie because your daddy did it that way.

I think I once read somewhere that the dimple helps show off the texture and shine of the tie. I'm sure there are people here who can confirm or disconfirm this.

GQ writer 1: Dude, I have to write an article about dimpling your tie. What the **** is there to say about dimpling your tie?

GQ writer 2: Huh. **** if I know. Dimpled ties always reminded me of vaginas though.

GQ writer 1: Vaginas huh? Our readers do love vaginas. They also love **** from Italy... "The practice of dimpling a tie comes from ancient Rome, where officers would place folds in their scarves, to indicate how many mistresses they kept, that formed a knot reminiscent of a ******."

GQ writer 2: ****, that almost sounds plausible. Let's call it a day and go have some Red Bull and vodkas.
