Thanks in advance if anyone is able to help with this query but are you aware as to if there is any excess material in the hem of J-crew relaxed fit chinos so that they might be lengthened?

No experience specifically with J Crew chinos, but chinos that come hemmed (ready to wear) usually do not have the excess material to allow them to be lengthened.

There is maybe an inch under the hem of my Wallace and Barnes chinos, but the issue with letting out cotton is that you stand a high chance of the old stitching holes remaining visible afterwards. Always better to take in rather than let out when it comes to cotton fabrics.
