Are you implying that being stylish and frugal are mutually exclusive? Anyhow, after graduation there are usually several more years of being (relatively) underpaid during residency and/or fellowship.
Frugal style is fine, I dressed that way for years. But the student has expressed the desire to spend $100 on shirts (a reasonable amount that will get you a better fit than $30 if you go MTM) and I assume he is in control of his finances (perhaps he lives with his parents, or doesn't own a car, who knows?) so I say great.

I'll add that Kamakura is a good deal if you find a fit that works for you. I've been plenty happy with them.

Hugh & Crye also is pretty decent at around $100. Their sizing system is a bit weird, but once you figure it out it's simple to order with them.
