Is is advisable to wear a dark grey, knee-length wool-blend overcoat with beige chinos? After trying, my gut feeling says no "” too large difference in "formality level" "” but I'd be interested to hear what others say about it.

I suppose I shall have to try wearing it in public and see whether I find myself constantly trying to walk behind something to hide my legs...

In case you don't know ... say no!

Why ever not?

The perceived clash in formality (to which I do not subscribe) is the key to the success.

I always wear my full-length overcoat with cotton navy chinos. But then I didn't know you weren't supposed to do that and I don't know much about style. My main pants are chinos. I have two nice pairs of wool pants but I don't wear those ones every day.

What kind of pants are suitable to wear with an overcoat? Do I have to buy a lot more wool pants?
