I just bought a beautiful long pea coat by Gucci from the buy/sell forum. I'm really pleased with it but I'm considering some alterations, and I need some advice. It has working button holes, but the sleeves need to be lengthened about an inch. I know there's no good way to fix it, but I'm determined to keep the coat. Is it possible to get the upper button holes stitched up discreetly and then have new button holes added. I realize that you'll be able to see this, but since it's a black coat, I'm hoping it won't be so noticeable. Also, I'm considering having a thinsulate lining added. Does anyone have experience with doing this? I'm wondering what weight of thinsulate to use. I'm also concerned about it making the the coat look stiff/boxy. Any opinions would be much appreciated.

Not to sound daft, but are the buttons at the cuffs of an outercoat/topcoat ever functional? Suit jackets and sports coats, of course, as they were intended to be. However, what would the function be on an outer coat? Certainly the cuffs wouldn't ever be opened so as to allow the sleeves to be rolled up.

As yours already has opened cuffs, it may be a moot point, though I am still curious regardless.
