That's not how things work legally (usually).  If the Louvre sold you the Mona Lisa for $1000, would it's value be $1000 -- even though you could re-sell it for millions?

It'd be nice if things were that simple.  You'd like it (and so would I!).  But price is not necessarily the same thing as value.

You don't know what you're talking about

I doubt that anyone in this thread really knows the legalities of this topic. But we can agree that it's more complex than we'd like. And that's why there are variances in the declared "value" on customs forms.

you're right, I forgot that the tax man appraises all of my online purchases to make sure there is no foul play or "too good" of a deal

bit of a silly argument. for the purpose of customs the value of everything is what is paid.

there's a large West coast fashion retailer, I won't name as I don't want to get them into trouble, but their 'unofficial' policy for marking for customs is they use the wholesale value, that's the value they've paid for the item which is well below the retail or the Sale price. is this legal? it's a very good question, but it ensures that customers pay the minimum in import duities.

If you get too good of a deal you have to pay income tax on the difference paid vs. the value

At the risk of further filling this thread with discussion re: customs, I do have a quick question that I was hoping someone here might be able to shed some light on:

I ordered something from Slam Jam Socialism for ~$987 (shipped to the US), and just received a notification from DHL that I have to pay duties to the tune of ~$110.

I know that orders under $800 are exempt from duties, so this logically led me to conclude that anything above $800 would be assessed duties only on the amount over $800. E.g. I would be assessed duties on $987-800 = $187 worth of goods.

Was my assumption incorrect?

Most private carriers also charge "processing fees" on top of actual customs.

PSA for some size 46 out there: http://www.ln-cc.com/en/men-3/rick-...ket-in-black/ric0123002blk.html?cgid=sale-men

I haven't handled this particular iteration, but at that price...

Also this: http://www.ln-cc.com/en/men-3/rick-...ket-in-black/drk0124005blk.html?cgid=sale-men

And this

Someone who's an EU50 should kop this, I can't justify another heavy knit: http://www.ln-cc.com/en/men-3/archi...w08-in-cream/nnn0101001col.html?cgid=sale-men

Yes, it was incorrect.
