Official Archery Thread

Is anyone here into archery? I've considered getting into a few times and think I might take the plunge this year. Not bow hunting, as I have no desire to wander around the wilds or sit for hours in wait for game. It would be target shooting.

What type of equipment to you have (pics please!)? Costs? Where did you get lessons? Do you compete/hunt?

funny this thread should come up. I shot a recurve bow in high school and college and enjoyed it, as long as my patience would allow. After college I never again pulled out the old bow, but was thinking about it the other day and whether it's still any good. I'd been thinking about giving it another whirl.

FWIW, I was very anti-gear and - for some really strange reason - would even do without my eyeglasses. My eyes were still in decent shape, back then. I think I did use an old finger guard, though.

Yes, I'm concerned about my eyes too. They were never great and have gone down hill from there.

I don't think glasses are an issue, since you anchor the string under your chin.

FWIW, I just looked up the maker of my old bow and see they're still in business (damon howatt), I guess I had the hunter model, but they've put fiberglass on it - which I don't remember at all. It was a beautifully-made bow, too. I'll see if its still intact next time I see my folks.

Lessons: I took just a couple of lessons at the store, which had its own range. I did most of my practice in our back-yard, with a stand-up target.

I think I might run out to a local shop at lunch today. See how much a start up kit would cost and if they have instore lessons. See what type of bow they recommend for starting out. Would like to talk my wife into trying it too, so we'll need a light pull for her.

My old boss use to bow hunt. She lived up in the Mountains of Maryland, it took her over an hour to make it to work each day. She said she'd hunt bull frogs with her bow and arrows, real "Next of Kin" type stuff.

Wow, apparently you don't have to be in any kind of shape to do this. I'm torn between calling archery a sport or a competition. I'm leaning towards sport because there is no judging involved, but the fact that you can be a fat tub doesn't help any.

Not really. You just need a good pulling shoulder and a lot of patience. Now, if biathlon involved bow & arrow instead of a rifle...That would be quite cool. Of course, there would be flesh woulds all over the damn place, but such is sport, right?

Isn't Geena Davis a world champion in this?? The fact that a full time actress can do it also takes away from it a bit. I don't want to offend anyone, and if archery is your think don't mind me, but this runs very close to Nascar when it comes to useless, borderline "sports".

Yeah, but this "sport" will come in handy after the Apocalypse and/or Peak Oil. You have to be forward thinking.

You can make your own arrows and there is no gun shot noise to draw the zombies to your location. Further, after civilization collapses, you will eventually run out of bullets. Save your bullets for extreme self defense situations.
