Noisy derbies

I own a pair of Alden derbies that are as stealthy as ninjas...

And I own a pair of A&E Cliftons that creak and groan like an old wooden sailing ship...

Most of the noise is coming from where the lacing tabs rub against the vamp.

Assuming Astroglide is bad for shoe leather, can someone suggest a way to get my Cliftons to sound more like my Aldens?

Rough up the lining behing the facings with some scotch pad. Temporary solution would be to put some talcum powder there
