I am starting my new office wardrobe and need some advice. First off I am slim guy, 5'8 140lb, 36 chest. I'm thinking that I should get ties with 2.5" inch width. Is this is the proper width I should be getting? I also need to buy shirts. Do I get shirts with point or spread collar? Is the 2.5" tie too narrow for a spread collar or would it be fine? Thanks.

So you would recommend wearing spread collar with 2.75-3 inch ties? I'm curious; how well do slim ties work with a spread collar? What kind of knot would I have to use?

Try match your tie width to the coat lapel width. You can tie different knots to fill up a spread collar, as long as it isn't some outrageous spread.
