I've worn a lot of desert boots and converse shoes and boots, but they've never rated well in teh comfort stakes for me. I love chelsea boots (personal faves are RM WIlliams and Blundestone) for ease of slipping on and off and general comfort for light walking and daily wear. But when it comes to serious hiking and comfort - you can't beat Docs.

Docs, once worn in, are pretty comfortable, but they're quite heavy. If you walk around all day in them, you're going to feel it. That's why I'd opt for a lighter shoe.

huh, I actually think Docs are very un-heavy. Wear something similar like Red Wing GTs for a day, then Docs the next and it's a world of difference at how lightweight Docs really are. Last year I brought GTs and a pair of Docs to Europe and walked massive amounts in both, and the Docs were so much better for walking around in that I hardly wore the GTs by trip's end

but with all things subjective ymmv

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I suppose mainly what I'm looking for is a shoe that I can wear when traveling, through rain/snow/shine, and that does look good. A shoe that is sleek and durable and would be comfortable after I've spent 10 hours in a car, or after I've walked around the entire louvre.

As far as sneakers go, I'm very picky about sneakers and I tend to prefer really sleek profiles. I like the look of CPs and while the price tag alone is not the problem, I have heard some issues with quality and don't want to drop 300 on a shoe that isn't going to last me a long time. While I would eventually like a pair of sneakers, I think that I would rather prefer non-sneakers (since I am so picky).

I like the look of Doc Martens, but I feel they are too clunky for my aesthetic. I like the look of JPs, but I feel that they are too common. I know I'm being picky, but if this wasn't such a difficult question then I wouldn't have asked it and I'm not expecting the perfect answer.

I'll continue looking into different shoes and look into getting gel inserts and see if that increases comfort. I just want to be able to show non-SF people that they don't always need to wear tacky, clunky running shoes because there ARE shoes that look good and are comfortable on your feet.
