Your gandparents won't pay for Oxford? You presumably worked your ass off to get there. Its not like your asking for a ******* car. I don't buy this.

Why don't you tell them to lend you the money and you'll pay it back with some interest. You learn the value of money and they bleed their grandson dry during their golden years to teach him a lesson.

Different colleges and schools have different arrangements at Oxford. You should spend a few minutes to understand your program. My experience is is quite different.

Sounds to me like you are putting the horse before the cart.

Yup, I did grad school at Oxford and I didn't have to show any funds to get acceptance...

Being the janitor doesn't really count as "doing grad school." A for effort though.

Now, if you get in, start a new thread asking for advice on where to find the money you really need - obvious answer is to get a loan.

I think it's reasonable to get a letter from the grandparents stating that they'd cover the costs, but if the University doesn't pony up a fellowship, then he shouldn't go. It's crazy to borrow money to get a PhD in philosophy, that's like taking out a loan to buy lottery tickets. Especially since the OP has stated he hates students and teaching, the chances of him getting a tenure-track job that he'd want are mind-bogglingly poor. Just for reference, my understanding is that jobs that he wouldn't deign to take, such as teaching at a liberal arts college, get about 600 applicants -- all with PhDs, publications and teaching experience.
