Is this a sport coat or orphaned suit jacket?

Hi all,

I am trying to build a closet of sport coats. I only have one so far. I’m looking for a navy blazer and found this herringbone pattern jacket that I like.

Is this used piece a sport coat or orphaned suit jacket?

Also, can I use this kind of material in the summer? Or only fall/winter?

That is definitely a sportcoat, not an orphaned suit jacket. You can tell this because:
1. It looks like a herringbone tweed, which is a fabric for an odd jacket, not a suit.
2. The three patch pockets would not be used for a suit

You wouldn't want to wear this in the summer -- the fabric will be too warm.

Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for

Not so fast.
I have two herringbone full suits. One by Polo, the other J. Press. Both have patch pockets, the Polo has three.

The picture shown is probably a stand alone. One of the nice things about a herringbone suit, or a houndstooth for that matter, is that they can be worn together or as separates.

Are your full suits herringbone tweed?

Have definitely seen herringbone for suits but not in tweed.

The Polo is full tweed, the pattern about the size as the photograph above. Admittedly these are rare. (And sought after by me.) The J. Press Is more of a worsted with a smaller pattern, but definitely winter weight.

Mildly related, I thought this item was interesting. Particularly because of the brand and the price. I would consider this tweed, but many people, myself included, think more of the burly Harris Tweed type when they think tweed.

Off topic question. I purchased a Hickey Freeman suit from the 1970s. It’s an”Thinlyte” fabric. Does anyone out know what Thinlyte is?
