On a serious note, Fritzl is correct. The clicker will choose the parts of the shell that match each other for the final shoe, including the direction they were cut (see DWFII posts on shell).

Given that shells are not that big (compared to a calf skin) the clicker has to use his skill to ensure symmetry in grain/texture in the cut sections.

most of the time... btw.

you're correct, too

on a random note:

what gives? i talked to a producer, who is refusing to work with horween shell. they don't have the number of shell orders, so it seems impossible to get a satisfying result for their customers. they refuse taking new orders for shell, except the customer provides the hide on their own cost.

fortunately, "we" were able to provide a substitute in boxcalf:

luk-cha and RSS also own a pair made out of this leather.

What leather is that, or should I say finish?

Reminds me very much of Appaloosa calf that Church's used many years ago.

In all probability it is the same leather as Church’s “Appaloosa Calf” or Crockett & Jones’ “Cavalry Calf” (note the references to horses).
EG also used it a few years back for the “City Polo Boots”, made for Asprey.

It is a corrected grain pull-up, aiming to duplicate the look of shell cordovan. I seem to remember Ron Rider once mentioned,
what Italian tannery produced it.

It looks very convincing as a hide or as new shoes, but it doesn’t wear nicely and, once worn, looks nothing at all like genuine article.
As the owner of the EG/Asprey boots (and a pair of Church's "Shannon" in “Appaloosa Calf”, years ago), I have first hand experience.

just because it's not what you have, i have a completely different experience. unfortunately my pair is at the tree maker, and he admired them, i cannot take a picture. probably RSS is so kind and helps me out.
