Is it possible to alter shoulders of a shirt?

I have a Barbera shirt (nice shirt) but the shoulders are about 1" too long on either side. I have asked a couple of places and they keep saying its a major job and they won't do it.

Is it a major operation to take off the sleeve, trim the sleeve head and the yoke and replace?

shoulders that dont fit, whether on a shirt or jacket, is like dropping your keys into a river of molten lava. you want to salvage it but let 'em go because, man... they're gone.

I look on this thread with a lot of interest because this morning I just gave my cleaning lady six shirts with poorly fitting shoulders and I wouldn't be too happy to learn that they might have been saved. On the other hand it just gives me an excuse to get some shirts that fit properly right off the bat.
