So after doing lots of reading and searching on here I feel I've secured at least a base knowledge of what to look for in a suit. I decided the next step was to go and try on a bunch of items to get a feel for what cut fits me best. I went to Mall of America figuring there would be several places I could try on suits of various quality levels. I went to Macy's first. I thought I would try on some entry level pieces then go Bloomingdales and Nordstroms for the better stuff. I had tried on a bunch of different jackets at Macy's when a very nice old lady walked up and asked if I needed help. In her defense, I hadn't seen her in the mens department and think she may have worked in a different area. She asked me what size I was looking at. When I told her I was a 42L she recommended I try on some 44 and 46 suits because, "I want to be comfortable."
That surprised me a bit. I asked her what thier best suit was. She pointed to the Hugo Boss suits. I'm sure it had nothing to do with those being between $800-1000! Anyway, now for the best part. I asked her if the Boss suits were canvassed. She gave me this really wierd, are you crazy look, and answered "um, no, they are 100% wool." I didn't want to be rude, so I politely thanked her and left. I'm sure she thought I was the idiot asking for a suit made out of canvas. I think I've learned my lesson.
