I have one bespoke suit that fit very well. Unfortunately I am unable to purchase more tailor made suits at this stage of my career. I am in an industry where I have to wear a suit every day. My tailor said that I have an odd shaped body and will have a hard time finding a suit off the rack that will fit correctly. I have an athletic build with broad shoulder and a skinny waist. My jacket size is 41L and my waist size is a 33 inches regular. Rarely can I find a 41L of the rack. Should I purchase a size up to a 42L or a size down to a 40L?

Prepare for the obvious answer...

You should always try on up and down sizes from your anticipated fit just to be sure. Some companies for example have little to no changes in shoulder width when sizing up or down. And every company/cut is different. So try the 40L and 42L and see if either looks good on you and make a go/no-go decision.

I wear a 36R usually but sometimes a 34 fits if it's not too tapered at the waist. Many times I wished they made a 35 but I look at the 34 and 36 and if neither fits I don't buy it. If the 34 fits and can be let out I'll go with that.

Size up. I wear a 44R jacket and 33 waist. Or try Jos. Banks they have carry even and odd sizes and let you pick out the correct waist for pants.

Are you committed to one brand, or do you have time to search for others? Brands are used to people asking for measurements these days, so if you find something that interests you online you can always email customer service to find out dimensions. Like someone above said, each manufacturer is going to be a little different. You might find a few brands that have better dimensions for you. There are other brands out there that have more sizes. I'd look at Brooks Brothers before JAB personally.

But since you asked specifically about up to a 42 or down to a 40, just keep in mind that you need to make sure the shoulders fit first. You can alter the the body. Don't get a 42 just for the length if it is then too large in the shoulders.

How tall are you?

You have to put time in, sadly.

I have pretty much your same build and need to get MTM (or bespoke when I am feeling flush).

I have found, however, that Suit Supply Havana fit fits pretty decently OTR. Depends how "fashion forward" you like your cuts, however.
