I knew quite a few young, up and coming tech guys in SF. Starting five or six years ago they would say, "As soon as I get my IPO (or buy out) I'm going to a place where life is more affordable, where I can buy a home, and have kids have a normal life". Honestly, although we had already decided we wanted to move, that was a major push to start looking elsewhere.

If you're moving from SF to NYC, LA, Boston, Seattle, or DC (i.e. large cities that are comparable to SF politically/socially and also have very strong job markets) it's not like your COL goes down that much. Chicago would be the main counterexample, and of course if you want to move to the south then you're in much better shape COL-wise.

I am of course biased by my peer group (mid-career tech workers) but I don't get the impression that lots of people are yearning to live on ranches in Wyoming. But I also don't have tons of friends who are on the cusp of making $30M in one fell swoop (i.e. who cares about job prospects because they never have to work again) who don't also have strong family ties to one of the aforementioned large cities.

I can almost roll down the hill to the original Pizza Hacker. They make a tasty pie. Mill Valley isn't quite far enough away to be a lunch stop

It’s got to be close to the exact midpoint between us

I'm on the north side of the hill, so it's south of both of us, but more to the west for me.

Yeah, well, Pizzahacker makes a better story than “the gas station on Cesar Chavez that used to be an Olympic”
