Took it in to get checked out today. Turns out my car needs a new cat, knock sensor, idle motor, and gas tank sensor. 1500 in hidden repairs. No pictures, this time.

Well at least you can just go to the pound to get a new cat. Not sure why the car needs one, but whatever.

How can I take pictures of the damage when they're internal parts? Perhaps you would like a picture of a pile of bills? I'm not even anywhere near my mechanic right now. You'll have to make do with pictures of the Civic, post crash.

I feel about as fantastic as I did when I crashed, though I guess this time there was even less I could do to prevent it.

Be happy all you had to spend was $1500... if you were one of the suckers who bought a used Bimmer or Benz... then you'd have it real rough.

Here is one of those suckers who paid $4000 for a low mileage '87 300E Benz, spent about $2-3000 on repairs over the two year and 10-15k miles I put on it and was able to sell it for $500 on ebay due to cracked cylinder heads, yea!!

1. "cat" is this catalityc converter? Only state inspection can determinbe if you need a new one.

2. Idle motor? You hear irregular noise when idling?

3. Gas tank sensor? Does it give you inaccurate reading?

do you trust this guy? If not i would get a second opinion.

I do, as much as I'm likely to trust a mechanic, in any case. They have a very solid reputation both in this town and on CarTalk's website. I've taken my previous cars there and they never "discovered" any wealth of problems. I'd be suspicious otherwise, but it seems more likely that I just have terrible luck.

Atleast you learned your lesson

That 300E was among one of the more well built Benzs too. The newer ones are total junk.

Jaguards, Land Rovers, Mercedes Benz, Land Rover, Audi ...... never buy one used.

When you're buying a used car, practicality is the most important factor. Getting a used luxury car for image is not going to impress any one. It's especially not going to impress anyone when it's sitting broken in your front yard.

If you feel that you "deserve" a luxury car and you can't afford to buy one new..... then you deserve the repair bills too!

I know how you feel. I just got a new camry and in the first week someone put a dent in it in my parking garage. I was pissed.
