Very nice, Kai. Brent Black's stuff makes me dribble. I can't really justify paying the price of a nice Montecristi right now... got a somewhat decent brisa weave Cuenca yesterday for sun protection, which I need for my balding head. Maybe I'll get some pics up later...

I've had my Brent Black hat for I think 7 or 8 years. Pretty sure that prices have risen a bit since I got my Montecristi all those years ago.

I've got one of his "safari edition" hats on order. Darker in color than the Montecristi, it's a bit more all-season than the lighter classic Panama. (It's going to replace a cheap brown straw hat I've been wearing.)

Something to keep in mind - the finer the hat, the less it breathes. On the other hand, the finer ones are lighter, look great and last longer. I have two. A very fine one I wear for more dressy occasions and a decent one for every day. The everyday ones are a bit airy as the weave is not so dense. They also wear out and get replaced every year or two.

Hi,

I have a suggestion about hats concerns. You can always buy something more economic but it doesn't mean the hat will be different. The price will always varies according with the grade.
If the grade is 5, 7, 8 offcourse it will cost more. The commercial grade is 2 and the 3rd grade is good quality, good price, still looks elegant and it has the same qualities than the other grades, the only different are the rows of weave.

You can check our web site to find more affordable hats at www.hatecus.com

I can vouch for PanamaHatsDirect, having purchased two pieces from him. I am no expert, by any means. However, the very respectable folks at Salmagundi in Boston where I normally get my hats always comment how beautiful they are. From my research, you will be hard pressed to find as fine workmanship on a montecristi for less than two or three times his price.
