How to Make a Messenger Bag Work with Blazer?

Hello everyone,

I'm new here, so hi :)

I was wondering if you guys have any tips or tricks how to make a messenger bag work with a blazer.

I'm a freelancer and have to carry around 9-10 pounds (4,0-4,5 kg) of stuff, which makes a total load of 12-13 pounds including the bag.

So far I consider messenger bags the only viable option. I don't like backpacks, in formal settings I wear a suit and use a briefcase or a pilot case, but that's just too impractical for my everyday work routine, as I like to walk around quite a bit between and after my coffee shop based work sessions, especially when travelling abroad. Still I like to wear something not too casual, and I especially like wearing blazers.

Do you have any experience how to make the blazer/messenger bag combo work? Do certain styles or kinds of bags/blazers go better together? What features should I look for in bags, straps and blazers?

Looking forward to your replies!

This simple answer is no: any bag with a shoulder strap (and I understand messenger bag to mean that) is going to destroy your jacket shoulder, so your options are:
  1. Accept that you will destroy your jackets
  2. Use a briefcase or duffel bag as suggested
  3. Get a bag with a detachable shoulder strap, and when you need to use it take your jacket off and put it in the bag.
My choice would be #2

I rather think Quesjac is exaggerating in Point 1 to be kind and 3 likewise.

Just use what you own in combination with whatever clothes you have. Your clothes will not disintegrate, few have one bag per outfit, even fewer will notice what you do.

Bags need a strap and possibly a lock, a blazer will ideally have sleeves.

Very much a case of overthinking a banal issue.
