How should a trench fit?

I'm looking to buy a trenchcoat, but i'm not sure what size to get. I have a 43" chest, so i'm thinking about getting a size 42 which is actually 46" around. Thoughts?

You should never buy clothing without having tried it on in a store. Different brands have different cuts, I have worn suits from size 36 to 40 which fit me perfectly.

Try on a trenchcoat in the store. Wear a suit jacket underneath it to make sure the trench fits over it. What fits you perfectly is the size you should get.

Ideally you want to try it on with a suit jacket, if you were planning on wearing it with one normally.

I wear a 38R tailored to around a 35 (shoulders are disproportionally wider than my chest) and I have a size small trench tailored in the chest like my jackets. If you find a trench with traditional chest sizes, go with whatever size jacket you wear, as in if you wear a 44R, get a 44 in the trench.

And remember, a good tailor is your friend.

What he MEANS to say is that you should never buy clothing without knowing its measurements and how precisely they correspond to the ideal measurements for that garment on you.

Find out the shoulder width, chest width, sleeve length, and overall length that look best on you when it comes to trench coats. (Borrow one, take a cloth tape measure to a store fitting room, whatever.) Then you have everything you need to a trench online (B&S, eBay, etc.) potentially nicer than one you would be able to afford in whatever stores are around you, and the selection is bound to be greater unless you live in NYC.

Be careful with thinking that you can get it tailored. Many tailors will not touch it due to waterproofing.

Also, please stick with a traditional DB.
