How much to budget for clothing?

I'm wondering how much is a good amount to budget on clothes for the year (I'm talking % of your salary.) Assuming you don't need to overhaul and are just updating every year and don't have a job that requires you to spend a lot on expensive suits or whatever. What's a good number? Let's use the salary before taxes as a baseline, so if you make $100K before taxes and budget 5% on clothes, that would be 5000. Thanks.

I prefer to keep this kind of information from myself, thank you.

I've taken clothing a lot more "seriously" this last year or so and am slowly overhauling.

In the last year (since last may or june) I've probably spent like 6500 dollars. Given that I'm still a student, this has been in small amounts here and there as i make money from my part time job and odd jobs.

On the subject of circumstances, I completely agree. I'm able to spend this kind of money only because I don't have any real amount of debt at the moment.

As mentioned, what constitutes a responsible amount depends on your circumstances, not just your salary.

There are other budget threads in the archive.

Time just ran a feature that broke down expenses for an average American household with its average American household income of just under $50K. On average $450 are spent per year on man and boy clothes.

With taxes 50K probably gets you about 35K to spend, so that's about 1.2% of take-home if you want to be average.

$450 per year on mens clothing, that can barely buy a suit

Think of all the hicks who basically wear the same pair of overalls every day...

I would bet the average amount paid for a suit in the U.S. is around $250, maybe less. Just saying.

I dont know, even when I was a kid (lets say middle school) and I didn't even care about what I was wearing I could easily clear $450 a year...

I'm not talking about the avg american. I'm talking about members of this forum. If you have special circumstances, mention them. But I'm basically asking what you spend on yourself, not your family.

Strange, even before I knew anything about any suit or whatever, didn't care about clothing, my first suit was probably $500ish, which I thought was average...

Well I am glad I have a weird perception

Look, most people on this forum have $$$, some have a ridiculous amount of $$$, more than you could dream of... Some people drop thousands in one shopping spree...

There are also a few peasants on board with us, as long as jet likes them, they are allowed to post in recent purchases as well.
