Hi, does anyone know how much Shattuck or Raphael charge for a cashmere overcoat? Thanks.

I was at Oxxford and looking through their end bolts. I found a beautiful black cashmere which they could make up for about $3,800. I am wondering for that kind of money whether this is worth it or whether it is better just to spend the extra G and get bespoke.

Ditto for me. I'd feel too "blah" with a black overcoat.

Zach: Was it their "Emperor's Cashmere"? Or Imperial? Whatever the hell they call it...

Here's an example of an Emperors Cashmere Overcoat on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/6800-Mint-Oxxfor...QQcmdZViewItem

The seller is stada11 who gets some really nice stuff. But it sells for very high prices for Ebay items.

This particular overcoat seems like an oldie. The inner label is the old Oxxford style, and AFAIK Connolly's has been closed for years.

The "Supposed $6800 retail price", makes zjpj83's $3800 Oxxford Cashmere seem very reasonable. As to the color. If you are OK with black, I say go for it. Especially if you already have the other colors. Charcoal, Navy, Camel, etc.

If you were to go with Raphael or Shattuck, would you get a Black color?

I don`t think you could get a first rate bespoke overcoat made for $3800. I don`t think you could buy a first rate OTR overcoat for that price either.

What do you consider a first rate overcoat? I was cruising Ebay and I saw this Borrelli for $1599:

If Ebay is not your thing try Ben at ehaberdaher or lance at virtualclotheshorse, for all sorts of high end OTR overcoats for under $2000!

And if you don't like shopping on-line, I've got a feeling that Neiman's and Saks will have a lot of first rate overcoats for much less than $3800, in January!

Finally, if Zach can get an Oxxford overcoat in a beautiful Cashmere for $3800, do you not consider that first rate?

I would be very much interested in what you consider a first rate overcoat, and how much you think it would be!

As Kitonbrioni already mentioned, a first rate (whatever that is) bespoke overcoat would cost more than $5K for sure. Depending on the material, the price will go well beyond that.

I wasnt`t really thinking of Ebay, online shopping, and January sales, but I would imagine that a first rate OTR overcoat would cost more than $3800 (I was thinking more in terms of retail) unless you were lucky enough to come across a great deal (good luck finding the right size, material, color, etc. that you were looking for).

I would imagine that Kitonbrioni (recently crowned the king of first rate OTR overcoats) payed more than $3800 for his huge collection.

Custom made, a topcoat is about the same price as a suit. Cashmere raises the price. Cashmere prices vary by mill and weight and weave. 1st tier, 2nd, 3rd and so on for cashmere quality. Personally I like wool and cashmere blends if I am wearing the coat hard and everyday. 100% cashmere topcoats are quite luxurious though.
Oxxford or bespoke? Get the one that fits and is styled the best for you. Topcoats are long term investments. If you are compromising fit or style for price, in the long run you won't be as happy.

If I were to go bespoke, I would consider buying my own fabric for the overcoat and hope to save some money there.

I agree, black is less than ideal. I would love navy. Maybe a navy chesterfield. Hmmm...

I don't know what Frank charges for an overcoat, except to say: a lot. He is really finicky about cloth, which could be a problem. He doesn't like much cashmere, and it's hard to find the stuff he does like. He has been known to refuse to work with cloth that he deems unworthy. Also, I don't know of a good source for overcoatings. I ask after it whenever I'm at Tip Top, and the pickings are always thin and uninspiring. The one time I saw something really good they wanted $500 a yard for it. When it comes time for me to order a new overcoat, I am going to have a friend in Europe source the cloth for me.
