wondering about this - I am on vacation now, and spending about 2 weeks take home income (maybe 12 working days pay, take home) on my families vacation. I'll probrably spend another one days take home pay on a smaller summer vacation, and another days take home on a long weekend at the end of the summer - total maybe 3 weeks take home for the year.

how about you guys?

On recent good vacations, I've spent about a day's income per day on the ground. If I'm stretching it, I can do much, much cheaper. There are cheap places everywhere if you want to take the twins to a few dive bars!

Probably 15-20 days of net income for 3.5-4 weeks of vacation per year

I've never spent more than $1600 on a vacation. That was Plane + Hotel + Shopping/Sightseeing + Transportation + Food for 3 weeks in Tokyo in 2003.

I really go on the cheap - one of my favorite activities on vacation is finding the cheapest places to eat and trying to sneak into parks and stuff. I also try to stay on military bases because the lodges are cheap and clean.

China (2.5 weeks): $1000 + flight (used miles)
PR (1 week): $750
Penscala (5 days): $400

So yeah, pretty cheap.

Honeymoon for two was approx $3k plus food and touristy things. So not more than $3500.

Typically though, it's a weekend away for less than $1k.

We just aren't at a place where we can spend more than that or where we have the vacation time built up.

I try to keep it under a months pay, but that can be hard with the price of airline tickets these days. I haven't been on a real vacation in years though, a roadtrip during a long weekend has been the closest I've come.

Does anyone know of any place to find great deals on flights from US (Seattle) to Japan (Tokyo) either on the web or by phone? I think I've kind of exhausted the multiple layered travel sites search engines, but I know there are good deals out there since I just heard about this kid who got a direct flight from SEA to TYO round-trip for roughly $600 tax included. The best I'm finding right now is around $950 USD/person including tax from Seattle (traveling in Dec 07).

I appreciate the help.

It all depends on the vacation. Last September, I boarded Cunard's' Queen Mary 2's "Mediterrenean Explorer". It's a 15 day cruise that took us from Southampton to Spain, France, Italy, Gibraltar and Portugal. I wanted to spend a few days in London before we embarked on the ship. I also spent a week in Paris after the cruise. I had to make an 'investment' on clothes necessary for formal, semi-formal dinners required in the cruise. It was a birthday treat for myself. Worth every penny of it. Here's a photo of the ship docked in Cannes, France.

I think the longer you stay, the less you spend per day. Last year I went to Amsterdam and London for 2 weeks and spent about 1.5-2 months pay. Of course I did buy about $1000 in clothes, worth every penny for those. I also payed for two most of the time, including airfare.

At my current job, which pays a bit less than my last, I'd probably end up spending a month's pay unless I lived like a hobo.

I am an inveterate homebody, and usually only travel under duress (either at the insistence of extended family or my wife). Hence, the cost of vacations is dependent upon the number and quality of restaurant meals and the grade of alcohol consumed poolside ...

Could see myself spending 5k for a trip to europe. Wouldn't spend nearly as much for a trip down south.
