I'm about to try out a new tailor in HK. I have a choice between two fabrics which are visually similar, an unbranded "Super 150s" made from I think 85% wool, 10% silk, and 5% cashmere or something like that for $345, and a VBC super 110s for $430.
The Super 150s felt smooth and crisp, but not totally like wool (obviously). According to the tailor the Super 150s wouldn't crease, because of the silk added. The VBC felt fantastic and softer, but also more delicate and the tailor said that it would crease more easily. My gut also says that the VBC would be less durable.
The tailor also said that visually, people 'in the know' would be able to tell from how it draped and looked that the Super 150s wouldn't be 100% wool.
Now, I've never had non-100% wool suits made before, save for a wool/poly blend that draped and looked like crap. So I don't know how the crisper but 'faker' feeling Super 150s would drape. I also don't want it look cheap, as many wool-blend suits do. Given my reservations and the rather small price difference, should I just go for the VBC?
I'm well aware that the tailor/frontman is just going to send the suit to be made in a Shenzhen factory probably, but given how cheap it is I don't care, and I like him anyway - we have nice chats about suit styles. As an old alterations tailor once said to me, "If you're getting bespoke suits below $1000 who cares how long it lasts or how it's made, you'll toss it out in a few years anyway once trends change. Just get whatever you like, looks good and is reasonably cheap".
The only concern is that this is a new tailor I'm trying out, and I wanted to get something cheap to try out his 'style' first. I was originally going to get a $250 blazer, then upgraded my budget to a suit once I realized I'd wear a suit more, and now I'm looking at VBC...I just don't want to keep going up.
Any thoughts would be great - thanks!
