Its not part of the Regatta but a seperate event, a boat race down the Thames between crews from Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

For some reason it is a big deal in Britain.

But I'll give it another try next week - I love Hugh Laurie, have done for over 20 years since he showed up British TV. Did you know he rowed for Cambridge (or was it Oxford?) in the Boat Race? Do people in the States know about the Boat Race?

The boat race is indeed a big deal.

Not in terms of its actual sporting importance or relevance, but simply in that it is a long standing, high profile event.

Everyone here know what the boat race is, and it is televised live, which for a university sporting event is very rare (Varsity Rugby possibly as well)

Hugh Laurie is a household name in the UK and has been for 20 years or more.
