Homecoming dance for college

Hello,

We've got a Homecoming dance coming up in October at my college, which I'll be going to with some friends. Dress code ranges from anything from jeans and t-shirts, to people with tucked-in shirts and slacks. My friends want to make more of an event out of this, and will be wearing gowns from their old proms. I want to wear something nicer, yet with a stylish and trendy look too. No black tie. This is what I've got up here to work with:

Jackets:

- Navy high-stance 3-button Jil Sander, modern slim cut. My favorite, I'd love to wear this.

- Medium gray 3-button Valentino, more business-like with structured shoulders.

Slacks:

- light beige flat-fronts, cotton blend
- black flat-front wool slacks
- medium gray flat-front microfiber slacks
- heather gray (slight) boot-cut slacks in microfiber
- PDC jeans in four medium washes, one really dark wash (black sunkist)
- Diesels in dark blue
- PDC cords in dark charcoal and dark tan

Shirts (dress):

- Black
- Dark dark navy
- sky blue
- T&A lavendar with white stripes
- light lavendar brioni
- white w/ white stripe, french cuff
- white Agnes B with a strip of fabric running down each side of placket
- leaf green
- white with black monotone flower and leaf print
- white etro with blue and tan horizontal stripes
- multi-stripe with red, orange, and pink pinstripes

Shoes:

- light brown slide-ins
- black monkstraps
- suede Bruno Magli slide-ins
- black ferragamo bit loafers
- blue/white vintage-style reebok trainers
- black steve madden trainers
- cream/red Puma trainers

Are you going to wear a tie? I think the Jil Sander suit with a lavender shirt and coordinated tie/pocket square would be a pretty rakish outfit, maybe with the monkstraps or the bit loafers...

Yeah it's a suit, but the pants are at home. I kinda didn't want to wear it as a suit, since it would be probably too formal for the occation. Half the kids last year were in jeans and a logo t-shirt.

However, the jacket is styled in such a way that it looks modern, and fine without matching pants. No breast pocket, gorgeously darted sides that taper just right, etc.

Also, I was going to stay away from wearing a tie. I just want to keep it casual, yet have some elements of 'dress', like a fine shirt or the jacket.

Awesome - that's what I was thinking. The navy jacket looks really great with the lavender shirts, and the PDC jeans do help to keep it on the casual side. I'll probably go with something like that. Do you think the brown suede Magli's instead of the Ferragamo loafers or monk strap, though?

I was thinking the suede would be an interesting touch, but those black shoes could work as well, I guess I would try them on to see which one you like more.

Yeah, I'll definitely throw a few looks together soon. Also, the girls will come over and help me pick something out, but they don't necessarily have the best....taste....so I'll have to interject on their decisions.

I would do:

1. Navy Jill Sander Jacket.
2. plan white crew neck t-shirt or cotton dress shirt .. tuck out
3. boot cut light washed blue jean.
4. casual brown shoes..

I think it would work ..
