What you should be looking for depends on what you're looking for, if that follows. Qualities that would make for an excellent pair of casual shoes would make for a bad pair of suit shoes, for example.
There are a ton of primers on shoe styles you can read, and a ton of articles on shoe construction. I like Put This On, Permanent Style, and The Shoe Snob. Look for articles about the basics or introductory stuff -- you could get way bogged down in detail very easily.
